Pro Bowl Snub to Spur on Jaguars

Coming off a huge and very emotional win in Pittsburgh, the Jaguars were dealt the Pro Bowl snub this week. On a week where the team rallied around Fred Taylor first on the field and then in the postgame, the voters listed Fred as First Alternate.

Actually I think this is great news. First, it gives the team a reason to come out firing this weekend. No big-win letdown against a non-playoff team missing its starting RB. Nope, the team has a reason to be fired up now. Second, it has really mustered support for Fred Taylor amongst the fans and teammates. It’s different from last year where it seemed like MJD was the center of attention and people were wondering if Fred would be phased out. It really gives teams two backs to worry about.

Fred-die. Fred-die. Fred-die.

Jaguars 3-Game Road Trip to Define Season

Once again, it’s time for Florida-Georgia and the Fair in Jacksonville.  Of course for the Jags that means that it’s time to hit the road.  It’s bad enough that they have a three-game road trip, but now they have to do it without their starting QB.  And their fill-in, Quinn Gray,  was the third-stringer 9 weeks ago.  Todd Boumann was signed and he’s the best of a poor group.  Maurice Jones-Drew was limited in practice yesterday, so it looks like a busy weekend for Fred Taylor facing 8 or 9 in the box.

Of the three teams, perhaps their best chance at victory is this weekend versus Tampa.  The defense will have to do a better job of containing Jeff Garcia in the pocket.  In their preseason matchup, Garcia caused the Jags’ safeties problems when he would roll out.  With so little margin for error,  the Jags defense and especially safety Reggie Nelson could be under the microscope.

The second game, at the Saints, could be problematic for the Jags since the Saints seem to be getting back on track.  The Saints are easier to run on than the Bucs, but the Saints are also more likely to put 28 on the board and the Jags can’t afford to get in a shootout.

The third game is at the Titans.  Do I need to remind anyone of the butt-whooping that the Titans put on the Jags in Week 1.  They out-physicaled a physical team.

The Jags need at least one win on this road trip and it looks like this week could be their best shot.

Turnaround for Jaguars Wide Receivers

It’s been a while since I’ve written.  Not that long ago, Reggie Williams was in danger of not making the team.  Then he made the team but still far enough in the doghouse that he was deactivated for Week 1.    Well, two straight games with a TD reception and he’s finding a place on the team.  Granted, he may never fulfill the expectations that come with being a high first-round pick.  But he’s showing that he is at the very least a functional NFL-caliber wide receiver.

Meanwhile, it looks like the coaches are starting to stress what the Jaguars faithful have complained about for awhile.  I’m talking about Matt Jones’ perceived lackadaisical attitude.  The coaching staff is starting to question his effort.  He was listed as Quarterback 3 in Week 3, effectively deactivating him.  Do the Jags waive him?  Do the Jags take the bye week to shake up the roster and promote Charles Sharon from the practice squad?

Reggie’s a Dead Man Walking

I’ve just come back from the game and I’ve done a complete 180.

Reggie is a Dead Man Walking.

When they had him in the game, it seemed they would intentionally motion him to one side of the field and look to the other.

Or they would bring him to only block.

So, they either :

A) Already know what he can do and want to evaluate the others

B) He’s written his ticket out.

Broussard continues to impress and Sharon made a difficult catch. Walker and Northcutt aren’t going anywhere. Wilford has made some decent catches and Leftwich seems to have his timing right with him.

As a season-ticket holder, I have no problems if the Jags decide to clean house and clear out both Reggie Williams and Matt Jones. My biggest gripe is if they keep Jones over Williams. To me, Jones doesn’t want the ball and wants no part of contact. The throw in the corner of the end zone was severely underthrown so I can’t fault him for not catching but he never made any adjustments to the ball or seemed to want to get the ball either.

Sipping the Teal Kool-Aid

I’m really starting to believe the local hype around the new offensive coordinator that the Jaguars have brought in.  If the Jags passing game could improve to merely average they could have a geat season.  Watch out for Mike Walker and Reggie Williams this season!  Unfortunately, I think Matt Jones is a complete bust.  He just doesn’t want to go get the ball.

Swim Meet

Today, the Jags opened Training Camp.  Tonight, I’m totally dehydrated from spending all day in the sun.  But it wasn’t from training camp.  It was from my sons’ swim meet.  All of this for a couplle of events that totaled a few minutes.  The best part is that I go back tomorrow for more!
